Samsung has developed its first-ever QD-OLED TV, potentially turning out to be its best widescreen yet. Blending quantum dots to create a vibrant, 4K HDR image with the best of OLED, the S95B series promises even better picture quality than traditional OLED TVs and monitors.

Samsung's S95B is powered by the brand's Neo Quantum Processor 4K, the same found in its flagship Neo QLED 8K and 4K TVs. In addition to the advanced 4K upscaling, the QD-OLED TV "features an OLED brightness booster and perceptional color mapping to deliver brighter, more accurate highlights and the most realistic lifelike colors."

There's a distinct difference between OLED and QD-OLED are because they don't use an LED backlight to produce light. Instead, light is produced by millions of individual OLED subpixels. The technology was introduced by Sony in 2013. The pixels themselves -- tiny dots that compose the image -- emit light, which is why it's called an "emissive" display technology. This distinction leads to all kinds of picture quality effects, occasionally favoring LCD (and QLED), but mostly supplements OLED.

In announcing the QD-OLED tech at CES 2022 tech event, sister company Samsung Display called it a "QD Display," but the official name is simpler. "Since the term OLED is already widely accepted and understood, Samsung decided to go with the nomenclature 'Samsung OLED TV' to avoid confusion among consumers," a Samsung representative explained.

The S95B series will come in a 55-inch size for $2,200 and 65-inch size for $3,000, and it is available for preorder now to ship later in April. OLED TVs currently deliver the best picture quality available, and Samsung's OLED TV will likely outperform the company's own QLED models.
