Lapsus$ Hackers’ Cyber Attack Halted By Microsoft, Only 'Limited Access To An Account Was Garnered!

Just recently, Microsoft confirmed that a cyber-attack from the Lapsus$ hacking group, although halted, was able to get "limited access" to a single account!

The reported hacking was notably done by the Lapsus$, a hacking group connected to similar occurrences with Samsung and Nvidia, revealed that they had hacked Microsoft and got partial source code for products under Microsoft such as Bing, Bing Maps, and Cortana. 

As per Microsoft, they said investigators have been tracking the hacking group as they have targeted retail, government, technology, telecom, media, and health care sectors from all over the world.

"DEV-0537 is known for using a pure extortion and destruction model without deploying ransomware payloads. DEV-0537 is also known to take over individual user accounts at cryptocurrency exchanges to drain cryptocurrency holdings," as per a blog post posted by Microsoft Threat Intelligence Center. 

Microsoft explained that the hacking group's methods have phone-based social engineering, SIM-swapping, and paying employees and vendors in specific organizations to access credentials. 

Furthermore, the hacking group Lapsus$ does not seem worried about being low-key. As per Microsoft, the hackers even advertise credentials and use social media to announce attacks.

"Our team was already investigating the compromised account based on threat intelligence when the actor publicly disclosed their intrusion. This public disclosure escalated our action allowing our team to intervene and interrupt the actor mid-operation, limiting broader impact," the blog went on to explain further.

Although it was unfortunate that Microsoft got hacked by Lapsus$, the company's swift actions to deter the attack were commended by its users and overall netizens.
