Director Hwang Dong Hyuk On ‘Squid Game’ Season 2: ‘I Don’t Have Well-Developed Plans’
More than a week since its release, "Squid Game" has continued to dominate the trending searches in Netflix, social media, and the online world in general.
The South Korean Netflix original series was warmly received globally. "Squid Game" memes are everywhere and the cast has gained overnight international stardom. Currently, everyone is yet to move on from the thrilling story of indebted people risking their lives to win a whopping 45.6 Billion KRW cash prize.
"Squid Game" has become the most successful South Korean Netflix series and it deserves all the hype and love it is getting right now.
With the global success of "Squid Game," it is but normal for all the hyped-up fans to look forward to the second installation of the series. Adding to the anticipation for the second season of "Squid Game" is the cliffhanger ending that has given fans more questions than answers.
But the main question remains: Is there really a plan for "Squid Game" season 2?
In an exclusive interview with Variety, "Squid Game" director Hwang Dong Hyuk shared his plans for the mega-successful series.
The director described the process of making "Squid Game" as "harder than normal" indicating it was a process he is not eager to go through again.
"In my earlier days, I'd drink half a bottle of soju to get the creative juices flowing. I can't do that anymore... Writing ['Squid Game'] was harder than normal for me as it was a series, not a film," director Hwang Dong Hyuk shared.
Furthermore, the "Squid game" director explained that it took him six months to write and rewrite the first two episodes of the series only.
"It took me six months to write and rewrite the first two episodes [of 'Squid Game']. Then I consulted verbally with friends, and picked up clues for improvements through my own pitching and from their responses," director Hwang Dong Hyuk said.
The director then revealed that as of the moment, he doesn't have concrete plans for the second season of "Squid Game."
"I don't have well-developed plans for 'Squid Game 2.' It is quite tiring just thinking about it," director Hwang Dong Hyuk expressed.
Despite Hwang Dong Hyuk's revelations, fans might need not worry as the director also expressed his enthusiasm to work on the second season of "Squid Game." Such possibility, however, depends on the right conditions.
"...if I were to do it ['Squid Game' Season 2], I would certainly not do it alone. I'd consider using a writers' room and would want multiple experienced directors," director Hwang Dong Hyuk shared.
