The altercation between Will Smith and Chris Rock began while Rock was presenting the award for best documentary. The comedian joked, "Jada I love you, 'G.I. Jane 2,' can't wait to see it."

Following this, the camera then pointed towards Jada Smith, the wife of Will Smith looking unamused.

Some celebrities were not rather fond of Chris Rock's joke as Jada Smith has been open struggling with alopecia, an autoimmune disorder that leads to hair loss. Evidently, the comedian added, "That was a nice one."

Initially caught laughing at the joke, Will Smith then walked his way towards Chris Rock on stage. Smith then harshly smacked Rock in the face then made his way back to his seat. Smith then proceeded to shout the statement "Keep my wife's name out of your f***ing mouth!"

Viewers at home though did not hear the curse as censors muted it. Everyone, both the viewers and celebrities present, was shocked. Most especially Chris Rock as the comedian simply responded, "Oh, wow."

The whole event was then silent, but Chris Rock continued his job as a host and tried to ease the tension as he joked, "That was the greatest night in the history of television."

Furthermore, Sean "Diddy" Combs went on stage afterward and told Will Smith and  Chris Rock that they would have to settle the issue like family.

Around 40 minutes after the incident, Will Smith returned on stage to accept the Oscar for best actor, apologizing to the Academy and his fellow celebrities for the incident, though not mentioning Chris Rock.
