Not long after revealing both the Xbox Series X and Series S, Microsoft previously announced in July of 2020 that both the Xbox One X and Xbox One S Digital Edition had been discontinued, putting an end to their respective eras.

As per reports, the last gaming console version for Microsoft's generation, the regular Xbox One S, had also stopped production by the end of 2020. This gives Microsoft the complete ability to focus on their next-gen video game consoles.

Fans are not surprised as this strategy chosen by Microsoft has proven to be successful. When Microsoft released both Xbox versions Series X and S, the two video game consoles together have sold more units than any other previous Xbox console.

Notably, while Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft, did not announce specific sales figures, an estimate of more than 12 million units of Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S have been shipped already.

Fans believe that Microsoft is stepping up their game with their next console as both the Xbox One and Sony's PlayStation 4 were released in 2013 and an estimate of over 51 million Xbox One consoles were sold in 2020 while the PlayStation 4, has sold almost double the amount.

Further reports suggest that Microsoft is taking advantage of Sony's PlayStation 5 shortages by focusing on the future. Furthermore, Sony has decided to increase production of its PlayStation 4 consoles to combat their PlayStation 5 shortages.
