aespa Is The First SM Entertainment Group After SNSD To Achieve This In 14 Years
SM Entertainment's newest investment, aespa, has set yet another record for artists under the label because, on January 17, the 2-month-old girl group won their first-ever music show win.
aespa, composed of Karina, Winter, NingNing, and Giselle, debuted on November 2020 with a fresh concept of integrating virtual members into the group. For their debut, they released the song "BLACK MAMBA," which shows us the first glimpse and the back story about the "aespa universe."
With its groundbreaking "AI" concept, aespa captured the attention of both Korean and international K-Pop fans, and because of this, there's no denying that they are set to be the up-and-coming leaders of the new generation of idols.
Adding more feathers to their hat is their first-ever music show win on SBS Inkigayo for their debut song "BLACK MAMBA." They snagged the trophy for the third week of January 2021 with 4097 points and beating KyoungSeo's "Shiny Star" with 3913 points and Rain's duet with Park Jin Young for "Switch to Me" with 3559 points.
This achievement has put the name of aespa on SM Entertainment's hall of fame, being the fourth SM group to make a win on a music show with their debut song. The first SM artist to achieve such a feat was S.E.S's "I'm Your Girl" on Show! Music Tank in 1998. Next was the legendary TVXQ with their debut song "Hug" on Inkigayo in 2004. Prior to aespa, Girls' Generation (SNSD) was the last SM artist to win their first music show trophy with their debut song. SNSD's "Into The New World" won its first trophy on M Countdown in 2007.
Aside from winning their first music show trophy, aespa has won two "Rookie Of The Year" awards. Moreover, the group also peaked at 2.3M monthly listeners on Spotify with only one song. The MV for "BLACK MAMBA" has also become the most viewed debut MV in 24 hours and the fastest one to reach 100 million views.
