'This Is Us' To End After Season 6; Showrunner Hopes For An "Elegant" & "Satisfying" Finale
This Is Us will never have Tuesday nights filled with tears by Spring of 2022. Series co-showrunner Isaac Aptaker revealed that the NBC drama will have three more years before they reveal how things will end for the Pearson family.
Aptaker admitted that they don't have a plan to stretch the show for a decade. He revealed that the series will have three more seasons to tell the stories of the Pearsons in the past, present, as well as in the future. Aptaker, however, said they are hoping to have an elegant and satisfying ending for the fans.
"I would hope that it's elegant. That's what we're going for. I would hope that when we reach our ending, people think it's a really satisfying end place, that makes sense, and it feels like they've watched something that is a complete piece of work because that's really how we're trying to plan it," Aptaker told Deadline.
Creator Dan Fogelman previously revealed that they have already filmed some scenes for the series finale. Aptaker said Fogelman has a plan in mind from day one on how they will wrap up the series. He also revealed that everyone on the show-from writers to actors-knows where the series is heading and have an idea on how the story ends.
This Is Us currently stars Milo Ventimiglia (Jack Pearson), Mandy Moore (Rebecca Pearson), Sterling K. Brown (Randall Pearson), Justin Hartley (Kevin Pearson), Chrissy Metz (Kate Pearson), Susan Kelechi Watson (Beth Pearson), and Toby Damon (Chris Sullivan). All of them are expected to return in Season 4 and will stay until the end of the NBC award-winning drama.
This Is Us Season 3 has finally aired the second part of "Songbird Road" after weeks of delay due to President Donald Trump's State of the Union Address. Fogelman hinted on what are in store this season. He assured that viewers have yet to see the last of Uncle Nicky (Griffin Dunne). Jack's brother is definitely returning in the upcoming episodes.
Some couples in the series will also have trouble in their relationship. Kevin will stress out over Uncle Nicky and it will affect his romance with Zoe (Melanie Liburd). Randall and Beth will also encounter marital problems as he is about to start with his new jobs while dealing with some issues within his own family.
The upcoming Episode 13, titled "Our Little Island Girl," will be about Beth's backstory. When asked if Randall and Beth will be heading for a divorce in the future, Aptaker refused to confirm or deny the speculation. This Is Us airs every Tuesday on NBC at 9 p.m. ET.
