'13 Reasons Why' Season 2 Spoilers: Tyler's Tragic Gun Storyline Might Still Be Continued In Netflix Show's Third Season
The Netflix series 13 Reasons Why has been plagued with controversy right from the start. After all, the show that revolves around the suicide of a main character has been an unexpected hit that allegedly glamorized taking one's own life. But has 13 Reasons Why Season 2 gone too far with a storyline involving gun violence? There are speculations that the drama will only take it further by exploring Tyler's story in the next season. The following contains 13 Reasons Why Season 2 spoilers so proceed with caution.
In 13 Reasons Why Season 2, Devin Druid's Tyler Down has become more isolated after he testifies at Hannah Baker's trial. Unfortunately, this led to the teen spending more time in the company of his guns, most of which he uses for target shooting. Although he has been bullied most of the previous season, Tyler suffers a particularly brutal assault involving a mop handle which proves to be the last straw for the young photographer. In the season finale "Bye," Tyler arms himself with an assault rifle and several other guns before heading to the school dance. But will Tyler's story become a major part of 13 Reasons Why Season 3?
Brian Yorkey has already defended his decision to put the focus on gun violence in 13 Reasons Why Season 2. The showrunner told The Hollywood Reporter that the series is "very interested in continuing to follow [Tyler's] journey and to try to understand his state of mind and the state of his soul." Yorkey added that the series is simply telling a familiar story since "there's a great deal of literature about a great number of troubled young men who resorted to or almost resorted to violence to act through their feelings." The creator did not reveal whether Tyler's current storyline will be pursued in 13 Reason Why Season 3 but teased that the drama will "start more conversations about those issues."
But what are the chances that there even will be a follow-up to 13 Reason Why Season 2? The premiere of the current season came on the same day that a gunman shot 10 people outside of Santa Fe High School in Houston, Texas. In addition to that, there are already complaints from infuriated viewers demanding that the series should be cancelled due to graphic violence against teenagers. Brian Yorkey and Netflix have not yet addressed the issue but are possibly looking forward to producing 13 Reasons Why Season 3.
