New Apple Patent: Long Distance Wireless Charging in Near Future?

Apple's new Patent hints at long distance wireless charging

A recent U.S patent that was granted to Apple, leads many experts to believe that the Cupertino tech giant is experimenting with wireless charging. Wireless charging is a new feature that has made its way into many modern-day phones and tablets but none of the Apple products. The recent Apple patent could change that.

According to Apple Insider, the Apple patent shows a detailed design that attempts to deliver power over long distances using signals sent via frequencies of 2.4GHz to 5GHz.

If this is true, then the said patent technology would allow you to charge your device while connected to a strong enough Wi-Fi signal. According to the Apple patent, once the device has finished charging itself, it can stay connected to the same network and provide power to other devices that are connected to the same network.

Like most of the patents that are filed, this technology has a very slim chance of finding its way into the consumer market. But it seems like the Apple patent is in preparation for the near future.

The Apple patent specifies that the power signals could also be transmitted using millimeter wave antennas. These antennas are used to make extremely high-frequency transmissions.

Wireless charging ideas were all the hype this year, with many companies eyeing the technology. Apple's new patent comes, a few months after Sony was granted a similar patent for long distance wireless charging using antennas embedded in everyday consumer electronics.

Facebook and Verizon plan on using millimeter antennas for high-speed internet without having to spend huge amounts of money. This is a super easy and cheap way to envelope cities and towns, in blankets of super high-speed internet connectivity.
