Agreement between South Korea and Peru

Peruvian Education Minister Jaime Saavedra Chanduvi and South Korean Education Minister (and Deputy Prime Minister) Hwang Woo-yea signed two agreements in July, allowing educators from South Korea to visit Peru next year to impart techniques in teaching math and science in Peruvian schools.

The agreement stated that South Korea would give assistance to Peru when it comes to developing efficient plans in using Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for the different levels and grades in the latter's education system. The delegates from South Korea will visit High Performance Schools (COAR) and secondary education centers carrying out Complete School Day initiative.

Next year's visit will enable the two governments to enhance and deepen their partnership in order to raise the quality of education in Peru through reciprocity and mutual benefit.

According to a BBC News report, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has ranked the "smartest" countries based on math and science test scores. South Korea is at the third spot, while Peru ranks seventy-first.

"This is the first time we have a truly global scale of the quality of education," said the Andreas Schleicher, OECD's education director.

"The idea is to give more countries, rich and poor, access to comparing themselves against the world's education leaders, to discover their relative strengths and weaknesses, and to see what the long-term economic gains from improved quality in schooling could be for them," he added.

Saavedra acknowledged that South Korea could contribute so much in the learning process for math and science, adding that Korean language will also be taught and promoted in Peru so students can visit the Asian country to further their education.

Minister Hwang Woo-yea praised the government of Peru for their drive in establishing close ties and exploring possible methods for improving their country's education system.

"We are keen to provide the necessary support, so that Peru can accomplish its welfare and development objectives through education, which is the best way to achieve them," said Minister Hwang Woo-yea. "Let's set up a committee with representatives of both ministries to implement the agreements as soon as possible."
