"Running Man" viewers who shed tears over Gary's departure and the controversy that erupted last year have a reason to rejoice as insiders reveal Gary's comeback.

Insiders revealed that the 38-year-old rapper already took part Tuesday in the filming of the widely popular SBS variety show for an upcoming special episode slated for January 29.

"The episode is set to air 2 weeks later so it's difficult for me to tell you the content of it but it was kept very secret so everyone was surprised. It will be filled with secrets and surprises so please look forward to it," Koreaboo quoted producer Lee Hwan Jin as saying.

Gary left the show on Episode 324 in October last year because he wanted to focus on his music career. The show then featured him as a guest on Episode 325.

He was with the show since its first broadcast eight years ago and has shown an enviable camaraderie among the cast members.

When the "Running Man" controversy broke out last month, Gary showed his support for his former Monday Couple partner Song Ji Hyo and friend Kim Jong Kook.

"You guys worked very very very hard. Thank you," he wrote on Instagram with an accompanying photo of them three looking happy together.

Prior to this post, Gary deleted all the contents on his Instagram account and even unfollowed everyone which led netizens to speculate that this was his way to show his frustration over the controversy.

The controversy placed "Running Man" members Song Ji Hyo and Kim Jong Kook on the unwanted spotlight as the producers of the show cancelled them out without proper communication.

The stars' loyal fans and the show's avid viewers went into a social media fury which led to the entire cast and crew's unanimous decision to end the show in February.
