South Korea Sends Home Nine Russian Athletes, Trainers And Journalists For Alleged Rowdy Inflight Behavior En Route To The 6th CISM Military World Games
Nine Russians, including five men and four women, were sent back home on Friday by South Korea for alleged drunkenness and rowdy behavior in a Korean Air flight from Moscow to Incheon International Airport for the sixth CISM Military World Games, reported BBC News OCt. 2.
The nine were placed in detainment at the Incheon airport and were banned from joining the military event.
According to police reports, the Russians were complaining noisily and blocking the plane craft aisle when cabin crew refused to serve them more alcohol for apparent drunkenness.
CISM organizing committee spokesman Yoo Ji Hyun stated that the nine were allegedly violating the aviation security law of South Korea with their behavior.
Yonhap News Agency reported on the same day that only eight Russian delegates were left to continue on to the World Military Games.
A previous report from Korea Portal noted that the sixth Military World Games will be held at Mungyeong, north Gyeongsan province in South Korea and will run from Oct. 2 until 11.
The event, known as the "Olympics of Soldiers," is directed towards unifying soldiers from across the globe through world-famous team sports including basketball, volleyball and football; combat sports such as boxing, wrestling and taekwondo; as well as military sports such as shooting and parachuting.
"The theme during the opening and closing ceremonies will be 'The One'," said Kim Sang Ki, chairman of the organizing committee for the Mungyeong Korea 2015. "Bringing together soldiers from around the world as one through sport to this country that remains divided."
Sadly, despite the unity goal of the Military World Games, North Korea will not be sending their troops to the event following due to ongoing tensions with neighbor South Korea, to which they are separated from through a demilitarized zone.
The sixth CISM Military World Games was attended by 7,000 athletes from 117 different countries and competed in 24 sport events.
