IVE Looks Can Kill Provisional Review: Tracklist, Credits

IVE (Starship Ent.)

A note before the verdict. This review is written from the release's published track list, credits and the agency's own descriptions, not from a full listen to the EP. I am not describing how the songs sound. The rating below judges how the project is built, and it will be revised once the audio has been heard end to end.

IVE put out "Looks Can Kill" on Oct. 26, a six-track EP that Starship Entertainment announced in early October. The title track came out a week earlier, on Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. KST, as a pre-release single, so the group's fans had seven days with the lead song before the full record arrived. Starship described the project as an expansion of the "girl fantasy" world IVE has built across earlier releases. A Chinese-language explainer from Sina described the concept as "Girl Hero," in which the six members play heroes, continuing the Cupid and magical-girl characters of past comebacks. That description is from a secondary source, so treat it as a reading of the concept, not an official statement.

The most visible structural choice is the name. For the first time, the EP's title does not contain the letters I, V and E, which the group's album titles have long followed. Sina's report said the project is positioned as a spin-off and not as a numbered release. The Korea Herald called it IVE's fifth EP. Those two framings do not fit together, and it is not yet clear which one Starship will use going forward.

The track list is short and ordered like a pop record with a point of view: "Looks Can Kill," "Mirror Mirror," "SNAKESKIN," "CRUMBS," "Girls Girls Girls" and "Glow Motion." The titles suggest a run of images about appearance, danger and self-regard, which matches the hero concept. They also read as a compact EP and not a sprawling one. Six tracks give little room for filler, and that discipline counts in its favor.

The credits on the title track are the most interesting part of the paperwork. Lyrics are credited to Gaeko, Ji Eum Seo, Lil Cherry, member Rei and Rick Bridges, with rap-making credited to Rei and Bridges. Composition is split among Charles Roberts Nelsen, BAVA, Ashley Fulton, Jason Hahs and MLITE, and the arrangement is by Inverness and BAVA. That is a writing room that mixes Korean rappers with Western songwriters, and it gives Rei a visible hand in her own verses. For a group whose appeal has leaned on polished, confident pop, a member sharing writing credit is a meaningful detail. A page tracking the release also lists Zara Larsson on "Glow Motion," along with producers Margo XS and Cecile Believe, but I could not confirm that role from a second source, so I am not counting it in the score.

What the numbers will say is not known yet. I found no confirmed chart positions or first-week sales for the EP. IVE's record there is strong: its 2023 EP "I've IVE" sold more than one million copies in its first week, and Soompi reported the group as the second girl group in Hanteo history to pass one million first-week sales with three different albums. That sets a high bar for this release, and it is a fair yardstick when the data arrives.

So why 7 and not higher or lower? The upside is a clear concept, a one-week lead single, a tight six-song format and a member with real writing credit. The caution is that the strongest evidence for quality, the music itself, is not part of this assessment. A score built only on paperwork should sit near the middle of the scale, a little above it because the paperwork is good. If the songs deliver on the premise, this moves up. If the writing-room mix flattens the sound into something generic, it moves down.

The next test is live. IVE's Liz hosts the Music Day of the Korea Grand Music Awards on Nov. 8, and the group is on the Nov. 21 bill of the MAMA Awards at Kyocera Dome, according to Soompi's schedule guide. Those stages will show how the title track works outside the studio.
