BTS São Paulo Concert Review: Setlist, Surprise Songs, 8/10

BTS sold out three nights at São Paulo's MorumBIS with a show that barely changed. The set runs 23 songs, and only the 20th and 21st rotate, Omelete reported from the tour's Goyang opener onward. The bet in Brazil was that a fixed spine and two wildcard slots would hold more than 80,000 people a night. From the setlists and press accounts of Oct. 28, 30 and 31, it did.

A note on method: this review was not written from the stadium. It draws on published setlists and Brazilian press reports. Those sources can't convey the sound mix, the sightlines or how the 360-degree stage reads from the upper tier, so the rating below is provisional and covers the show's design and documented moments, not its audio.

The design is the best thing about it. The set opens with "Hooligan" and closes with "Please" into "Into the Sun" every night. "Butter" and "Dynamite" sit back to back late in the show, right before the wildcards. That is smart sequencing: the biggest radio hits cash in at the moment the audience is most primed for a surprise.

The wildcards themselves rotated by night. Opening night brought "Black Swan" and "Silver Spoon (Baepsae)." Friday brought "Airplane pt.2" and "I Need U." The final night brought "Ddaeng" and "BTS Cypher Pt.3: Killer," the most hip-hop-leaning pair of the run. A Brazilian outlet reported that the second night's pair sent the crowd into a frenzy, and the pattern of Friday's choices suggests the group is matching the room, not working through a list.

The finale is where the structure pays off. After "Please," BTS left the stage to "Into the Sun" under paper confetti and fireworks, Tracklist reported. On the second night, fans staged a coordinated visual display during "Please," according to Infopebas. Lightsticks synced to the show changed color through the set, Terra noted, including during "SWIM." A closing sequence built to be photographed, repeated on all three nights, is the right call for a stadium this size.

The pacing deserves a mention too. A 23-song set that ran about 2 hours 20 minutes on opening night leaves little slack, so every rotating slot has to justify itself against a fixed order that the group repeats nightly. That discipline is a strength for a stadium production and a limit for anyone hoping for improvisation.

The weaknesses are about arithmetic. Two wildcard slots out of 23 is roughly nine percent of the show. A fan at one night hears two songs others won't, and a three-night fan hears six different songs in total, as local press noted before the run. The remix block is the other hedge: the setlists tag "Run BTS," "FAKE LOVE," "Not Today" and "MIC Drop" as remixes, so four of the catalog's loudest songs are not played as released. Whether those versions land live is the one thing a setlist can't tell me.

The central tension is one the format creates on purpose, and it is the same one every long stadium tour faces. A tour of 79 shows across 34 cities needs a show that can be repeated without drift. The people buying three tickets want the opposite. The wildcards are BTS's answer, and in São Paulo they were enough, barely.

Crowd counts vary by source. Terra put opening night at 81,000, while B News São Paulo counted about 85,000. SPTuris estimated 85,000 to 90,000 for the finale, according to Tracklist. The show ran about 2 hours 20 minutes on opening night, per ulti.com.br.

The Latin American leg is finished. The next test is whether the same 23 songs hold up in Asia, starting at Kaohsiung National Stadium on Nov. 19, 21 and 22.

ARIRANG is out now on Big Hit Music. The ARIRANG World Tour continues in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, on Nov. 19, 21 and 22.
