Scarlett Johansson says her role in "The Batman Part II" gave her "a lot of existential angst" and was harder than her other upcoming franchise role, in a new interview with Entertainment Tonight. Just Jared calls it her first public comment on the casting. It leaves the question fans keep asking unanswered: which character is she playing?

Johansson was comparing her two upcoming franchise roles, "The Batman Part II" and Mike Flanagan's "The Exorcist: Martyrs," when she singled out the Batman part as the tougher one, Gizmodo reported Thursday. She told ET she was not sure whether the difficulty came from the role itself or from where she is in her life, that the part was hard to figure out, and that she could not say more. IGN and Just Jared ran the same interview with headlines that stress the same two lines.

"It gave me a lot of existential angst for some reason," she said.

The character has not been confirmed. The prevailing rumor, which Gizmodo says it cannot verify, is that she plays Gilda Gold, the potential wife of Harvey Dent. In DC Comics, Gold stays with Dent after he becomes Two-Face and later turns into a villain called Holiday. Gizmodo notes that her description of the role could fit several characters. None of the coverage reviewed cites a studio statement naming the part.

The film has had a rough stretch behind the camera. Gizmodo reported Oct. 5 that director Matt Reeves paused production for personal reasons. On Oct. 16 it reported that production was back on, with Steven Soderbergh stepping in to complete principal photography while Reeves attends to a family matter. Gizmodo lists the film's release date as Feb. 28, 2028.

Johansson is adding franchises quickly. She is already part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the "Jurassic World" films. "The Exorcist: Martyrs," in which she stars, opens March 12, 2027, according to Gizmodo.

That release comes first, by nearly a year. Johansson has told one outlet that the horror film was the easier of her two jobs and that the Batman role was the one she struggled to crack. Audiences will not see how that struggle shows up on screen until February 2028.
