Joaquin Guzman Lorea Captured! Mexican Druglord 'El Chapo' Arrested He Escaped Prison Six Months Ago

The president of Mexico announced on Friday, Jan. 8, that Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Lorea has finally been recaptured after six month he escaped a maximum security prison. Guzman is an infamously notorious drug lord based in Mexico.

Guzman became the headlines last July when he escaped from his prison cell in the Atiplano Federal Prison. Authorities believed the escape to be an elaborately planned jailbreak, according to US Magazine. The trouble, however, is that all of it were caught on tape.

In the clip, Joaquin Guzman Lorea can be seen that he was all alone in his cell unit, then he started tying his shoes while being seated on his bed. Afterwards, he went to the shower where he disappeared. It has been reported that he disappeared through a hole in the floor. Allegedly, he climbed down 30 feet that led him to a secret tunnel that's a mile long before surfacing and eventually escaped. In addition, it was likely that he got help from "a mix of prison guards and his own people," according to Don Winslow, the author of "The Cartel."

"My bet is that he went out the front gate, and the tunnel was a tissue-thin face-saving device for Mexican officials, the motorcycle a dramatic improvement over the laundry cart," Winslow said.
The Mexican navy reported that it followed a tip to a home in Los Mochis. The Marines were met by an attack as they staged a pre-dawn raid. According to reports, five suspects were killed during the shootout and six were arrested, including El Chapo.

At least 20 prison officials were arrested last year, including the former head of the Mexican federal prison system and the former director of the Altiplano prison, in connection with the escape of Joaquin Guzman Lorea, according to Independent. The US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) applauded the re-arrest on Twitter, saying that it was "extremely pleased," adding "We congratulate the [Mexican] Government and salute the bravery involved in his capture."
