While initially intended to quell fans' thirst for the new season, the Christmas special only made avid followers even more desperate to see "Sherock" season 4 with Benedict Cumberbatch in the modern set-up.
"The Abominable Bride," though showed glimpses of modern Sherlock Holmes, Cumberbatch was mostly appeared as the Victorian-era version of the detective. Will fans get to see him as in the 1800s in the future once again?
According to the actor himself, he's willing to try filming more one-off episodes should "The Abominable Bride" perform well.
"Maybe, I don't know," he told RadioTimes as reported by Metro. "We'll see how this one goes."
Even though he's busy with filming high-profile films and attending events, Cumberbatch is still excited to give fans a respite in between future seasons. Viewers of the BBC show usually have to wait for two years before they can see new episodes.
"I think if it becomes impossible to schedule a season every year, year and a half then yeah, absolutely, why not? It's a great deal of fun, this, but it does advance things. It's not just on its own," he continued.
Certain news outlets have indicated that the special episode seem to be an extended trailer for the fourth season, with the characters dropping hints left and right throughout the episode.
CarterMatt mentioned that one such hint is a possible appearance of another Holmes brother.
According to spoilers of "Sherlock" season 4, Benedict Cumberbatch and Mark Gatiss, who plays older brother Mycroft, may be seeing another sibling entering the picture.
Several reports claimed that another internationally famous British star will be taking on the role of "the other one," as pointed out by Mycroft during the special.
CarterMatt claimed that Tom Hiddleston could be the brother, coinciding with other reports in the past.
Another question about season 4 that was answered during the special episode was Moriarty's apparent resurrection.
"Of course Moriarty is dead," modern Sherlock said, after coming out of his trance. "And I know exactly what he's going to do next."
"Sherlock" season 4 will reportedly start filming sometime in Spring, bringing back Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Mark Gatiss and Amanda Abbington for a supposedly darker three episodes.
