George R.R. Martin Disappointed In Himself For 'Winds Of Winter' Release Date Delay; Author Still 'Polishing' Story
It's been widely reported that the "Winds of Winter' release date will be announced before the New Year, but clearly that's not happening.
Now, George R. R. Martin is disappointed that he couldn't deliver the new installment of the "A Song of Fire and Ice" series, especially since that in all likelihood, the release date for "Winds of Winter" might not even be announced before the season 6 of "Game of Thrones" airs in the summer.
In a new post on his Not a Blog, he said the book is not finished.
"The book is not done, not delivered," he wrote. "No words can change that. I tried, I promise you. I failed. I blew the Halloween deadline, and I've now blown the end of the year deadline. And that almost certainly means that no, THE WINDS OF WINTER will not be published before the sixth season of GAME OF THRONES premieres in April."
George R. R. Martin also said that unlike his previous novels, where he as under no pressure to make a deadline, the popularity of the "Game of Thrones" series and how the events have caught up with what's happening in "A Song of Fire and Ice" novels are nagging at him.
"Look, I have always had problems with deadlines. For whatever reason, I don't respond well to them," he wrote. "But I won't make excuses. There are no excuses. No one else is to blame. Not my editors and publishers, not HBO, not David & Dan. It's on me. I tried, and I am still trying."
As to the "Winds of Winter" release date, George R. R. Martin said that he has no idea when it will be finished.
"I can't tell you when it will be done, or when it will be published. Best guess, based on our previous conversations, is that Bantam (and presumably my British publisher as well) can have the hardcover out within three months of delivery, if their schedules permit," he said.
"But when delivery will be, I can't say. I am not going to set another deadline for myself to trip over. The deadlines just stress me out."
