Legendary filmmaker George Lucas, was honored for his contribution to American culture through the arts at the Kennedy Center Honors, Sunday night, according to the Daily Mail.

The filmmaker's original "Star Wars" actress Carrie Fisher appeared on stage in hologram form projected by android R2-D2.

"I wanted to be there to help celebrate your Kennedy Center honor in person, but hey, since you invented video voicemail, I don't have to be," said Fisher. "Thank you for giving me one of my biggest roles and most famous hairstyles."

Lucas' wife, Mellody Hobson, talked about what a wonderful filmmaker and father Lucas is. Hobson shared that "Star Wars" is "not a movie about spaceships but about family."

Lucas' long gaps between movies were because he wanted to spend time raising his children, revealed USA Today.

Directors Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg also paid tribute to George Lucas and his work.

"He's a pathfinder and a pioneer like Edison and Bell and Tesla and Jobs," said Spielberg. "George Lucas' "Star Wars" absolutely changed films forever."

The celebration ended with an orchestra playing music from his hits including "Indiana Jones," "The Goonies" and "Star Wars." Special effects lit up the Kennedy Center Opera House.

Five of the world's known artists were honored that night. Alongside Lucas, the honorees were Carole King, Seiji Ozawa, Rita Moreno and Cicely Tyson.

Singer and songwriter Carole King is responsible for some of the biggest hits in music which includes, "I Feel The Earth Move" and "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman."

President Barack Obama vowed to destroy the terrorist group ISIS during a rare Oval Office speech, Monday night. After giving his urgent and serious speech, the president was rushed to the Kennedy Center and arrived at about 8:30 p.m. post intermission, reported Billboard.

The first lady of the United States was on time and donned a sleeveless black dress.

George Lucas' tribute and the "Kennedy Center Honors" gala will air on CBS on Dec. 29
