Our skin is rich with many kinds of lines and creases. From the eyelids that we see in the mirror to the almost imperceptible stripes that form our fingerprints, folds in the skin are natural features of ourselves.

Wrinkles, known as rhytides, also stripe and skirt over the skin, however, they differ among individuals. As we age, the skin produces less of the proteins collagen and elastin, causing it to become thinner and less resistant to damage. Combine this with environmental exposure, dehydration, and toxins lead to the development of pronounced wrinkles that are more noticeable as we age. 

Wrinkles are a natural aspect of getting older so there's no reason to despise them. Although, if you prefer to slow the signs of visible aging, there are natural ways to go about it.

Wearing sunscreen

It may already be common knowledge that sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) over 30 can help prevent skin cancer. A 2013 study in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that sunscreen also helped delay the signs of aging. Outside of the beach, wearing moisturizing sunscreen on your face daily can be a good habit to benefit your skin health long-term.

Sugar intake

Sugar in your body sets off a process called glycation, and advanced glycation end products (called AGEs) are not helpful for the skin. AGEs break down the collagen in your body and, over time, can make you look older. They have also been linked to food preparation methods such as grilling and frying (as opposed to baking and boiling). Limiting sugar intake and oil-rich foods will help one's face retain its youthful shape.

Curb smoking

Aside from smoking numerous harmful effects on health, it can also age a person's face prematurely. An interesting study compared the faces of 79 pairs of identical twins in which one had a smoking habit and the other one didn't. The striking differences in their ages made it clear that smoking does affect the condition of the skin on your face. Being around secondhand smoke can also increase the risk for many cancers and diseases, and may hurt your skin in the process.

Coconut oil

Coconut oil serves as a natural emollient. When applied to the skin, it fills in the gaps of the epidermis and makes the skin feel smooth. It also helps skin retain moisture, which makes faces appear fuller. Additionally, coconut oil has been studied and found to be an effective treatment for dry skin.
