Natural Frames: 5 Ways To Improve Your Vision Besides Corrective Glasses

by Victoria Marian Belmis / May 02, 2022 10:17 AM EDT
Eye fatigue

Eyeglasses can sometimes be expensive, including check-ups and purchasing frames. Some areas don't have optical shops or clinics nearby and individuals have to travel quite a bit to get their eyes checked. Thankfully, there are a number of natural ways one can try to protect and improve their vision without the need for corrective glasses.

Here are some methods you can adopt and practice to improve or prevent eye problems:

Screen breaks

Exposure to computer screens or extended periods of vision-focused activities can cause eyestrain or fatigue. A simple rule anyone can practice to mitigate this is the 20-20-20 rule.

Every 20 minutes, look away from the screen at something around 20 feet away for 20 seconds. It doesn't have to be exact, but consistency is key for this exercise to help to reduce eyestrain.

Sunglasses

Perhaps among the most common accessories, we use for our eyes are sunglasses. This is no surprise as the shades can help protect the eyes from ultraviolet (UV) light which can damage the eyes. UV light can also increase a person's risk of cataracts, eye cancer, and growths on the eyes, such as pterygium.

Individuals who spend a lot of time under the sun have a higher risk of eye damage from UV light. Sunglasses are highly recommended for farmers, fishers, surfers, and skiers. Some of these professions can also use hats with wide brims and goggles to protect the eyes. Opt for glasses that have adequate UV protection to match your level of activity.

Protective eyewear

Eye injuries of varying degrees can also damage the eyes and result from a range of everyday activities including household chores and playing sports. Working with certain types of equipment or in potentially hazardous environments also increases the risk for injuries.

Fortunately, protective eyewear is just as diverse nowadays and can prevent injury, damage, and irritation to eyes from impacts, debris, and chemicals. Some common examples of protective eyewear are safety glasses goggles, face masks, shields, and visors, as well as helmets.

Eye exams

Having a comprehensive dilated eye exam is the only way for people to be sure that their eyes are fully healthy, according to the National Eye Institute. During the examination, an eye care professional will use special drops to widen the person's pupils, which allows them to see into the back of the eyes and identify problems. A dilated eye exam can help detect eye conditions in their early stages, such as glaucoma and macular degeneration.

Vitamins

In case you forgot, research says that it's vitamins A, C, and E that are all good for eye health. The vitamins have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may decrease the risk of macular degeneration.

Good sources of vitamins A, C, and E include: broccoli, oranges, papaya, sweet potato, spinach, carrots, red peppers, pumpkin, almonds, peanut butter, and sunflower seeds

Several studies also suggest omega-3 fatty acids, such as docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid, play a role in eye health and reduce the risk of age-related eye disease. Foods rich in omega-3s include fish, nuts, seeds, and beans.

Bonus supplements

Preser Vision is an eye vitamin and mineral supplement that you can get at KPTown today. It eliminates eye fatigue and improves eyesight and helps dry eyes. For your Omega 3 needs, Omega-3 Omagen Schweitzz is also available at the store at 22% off.
