Fundamental nutritional support is vital to health promotion and disease prevention. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil are associated with a reduced risk of death by cancer and also help promote normal cardiovascular function.

Fish oil can be used as part of a therapeutic plan for the treatment of several health conditions - namely, depression, diabetes, fatty liver, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, heart disease, irregular heartbeats, and arthritis. The skin also benefits from Omega-3 fatty acids. Consumption may also improve skin disorders such as dermatitis and psoriasis.

Fish oil has also been used to treat periodontal disease and, in recent studies, was found to help people with asthma to breathe better. It helps deal with chronic inflammation, including the gums.

Fish oil contains two important nutrients for brain health: DHA and EPA. These fatty acids are particularly helpful for the brain because they are known to play a key role in cognitive function. DHA is one of the most common fatty acids in the brain of a human. By consuming them regularly, you may increase your mental energy and improve your memory. A study concluded that the intake of food or supplements rich in Omega 3 is less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease.

A study in 2003 shows that senior citizens aged 60 to 80 who included fish in their diet had fewer chances to develop macular degeneration or the degradation of the retina that can cause vision impairment.

The body cannot produce omega-3 fatty acids, so they must be obtained through diet or supplementation. The American Heart Association recommends that people eat fish at least twice a week. Tuna, salmon, mackerel, herring, and sardines have a high content of omega-3 fatty acids. Fish oil supplements are also available to those who do not want to include fish frequently in their diet.
