Nevada Teen Carter Wilkerson Appeals For Free Chicken Nuggets, Topples Ellen Degeneres' Record For Most Retweeted Post
A teenager from Reno Nevada just managed to dethrone Ellen Degeneres for the most retweeted post on social media when his plea to get free chicken nuggets for a year caught the attention of netizens worldwide. With 3.4 million retweets of his original post, Carter Wilkerson's post just beat Degeneres' famous 2014 Oscar's selfie with the likes of Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Brad Pitt, Angeline Jolie, Meryl Streep, Kevin Spacey and Julia Roberts.
According to a report by CNN, Carter originally shared a post of his conversation with Wendy's where he asked how many retweets he would need to get free nuggets for a year. He received the casual answer of 18 million tweets and the teenager accepted the challenge willingly.
After the interaction, Carter posted the conversation on Twitter and proceeded to make his appeal on the Internet. "Help me please. A man needs his Nuggs," he tweeted with a screenshot of his Wendy's deal. The post earned the collective interest of the internet and pretty soon, the campaign has reached Hollywood celebrities who wanted in on #NuggsforCarter. Even Nevada Governor Sandoval retweeted Carter's appeal.
Because of the success of the campaign, Wendy's has decided to give Carter his free year's supply of chicken nuggets even though he hasn't quite met the 18 million retweet mark. The teenager is now channeling his campaign's popularity to awareness for a worthy cause.
Carter has created a website called NuggsforCarter.com as a nod to his famous hashtag and sells t-shirts for the benefit of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. It came as no surprise that one of the first supporters of the cause was Wendy's who, along with the chicken nugget certificate, also sent Carter a check for $100,000 for the foundation.
Based on a report by Mashable, Ellen Degeneres, who invited Carter to her show to discuss his crusade for nuggets also to invite viewers to continue to retweet Carter and her tweets to reach the 18 million mark. As for Carter, it seems that his work is not yet done. "I have a voice now. It's good to use that voice," he said.
