Serious Crimes In South Korea Happen During Office Hours, According To Data Revealed By Statistics Korea
It has long feared that serious crimes often take place during nighttime, however, a recent data released by Statistics Korea revealed that most of the serious crimes committed in South Korea occur during office hours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Chosunilbo forecasted that 23.5 percent of rape crimes happened between morning and afternoon, while 10.2 percent of rape crimes were committed between 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
On the other hand, the percentage of robberies committed during daytime is slightly higher as compared to robberies which occurred between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. with 24.9 percent and 24.7 percent respectively.
"As criminals grow increasingly bold, daytime is no longer an obstacle to violent crime," said Oh Yoon Sung of Soonchunhyang University. "Women-only parking lots and other locations where they're supposed to feel secure can end up prime locations for a crime because they're quiet and empty."
Aside from that, murder crimes during daytime are accounted for 38.3 percent. Experts say that murders are frequently "committed in the heat of the moment than carefully plotted" which might be the reason for its high rate.
"More than 70 percent of murders occur after people get into arguments," said Lee Woong Hyuk of Konkuk University.
Meanwhile, Korean National Policy Agency statistics shows serious crimes committed by elderly South Koreas have reached 40 percent for the past two years, Korea Times reported May 11.
The agency also reveals that serious crimes committed by people aged 65 and above rose by 12.2 percent from 2011 to 2013.
Aside from this, statistics also shows that serious crimes such as homicide, robbery, rape, burglary and arson escalated 39.9 percent on the same period.
"Elderly people's body and health conditions are much better than those in the same age group in the past, so sexual crimes committed by aged people have been increasing," an officer from the agency said.
The officer added that poverty and diseases might be the reasons that compelled these elderly to commit violence.
