GFriend Talks Rivalry With TWICE, New, Funkier Concept And Latest Single ‘Fingertip’
GFriend has successfully made their comeback in the K-pop world with the release of their latest album, "The Awakening," carrying the lead single "Fingertip." In a recent interview, GFriend talked about their new album as well as their transformed, funkier concept and their friendly rivalry with another idol group, TWICE.
GFriend, which debuted in January 2015, is getting much attention again after the release of their new song "Fingertip" on Monday, March 6. The song and the music video notably showed the group's transformation from their more youthful, innocent concept into a more powerful, funk-driven style.
In an interview with Mydaily (via AllKpop), GFriend discussed their official comeback and new album. When asked how they felt about "Fingertip" topping the music charts, Sowon said: "It was a mixture of both worry and excitement. It was mainly due to all the changes in our concept. Luckily, the teaser was well received by fans and for the first time we were on real-time search rankings during a teaser release."
The GFriend members said they felt satisfied with their transformed concept. "We wanted to present a more dynamic appeal so we took off our uniforms, and are happy that we were able to achieve a chic look," SinB shared.
Due to the group's increasing popularity, GFriend is also being compared to other popular girl groups today like JYP Entertainment's TWICE. According to Sowon, GFriend members have been good friends with TWICE members. She also acknowledges their friendly rivalry with TWICE, saying, "I don't really want to label them as rivals, but it's better to have a rival than to not have one."
GFriend also shared how they cheer on TWICE and how the two groups give compliments about each other's music videos. "Although we're around the same age, we each have different concepts and songs," Umji added. "As GFRIEND, we try to show everyone our unique colors so that they can see a variety of girls on TV."
