The iconic 1968 Mustang GT that was made famous by Steve McQueen in the movie "Bullitt" has been found and restored. The car disappeared after filming for the 1968 movie wrapped up and the late actor's attempts to find and add it to his car collection didn't succeed.

A pair of car restorers has found the classic 1968 Mustang GT in a scrap yard located in Baja, California and went to great lengths to restore the automobile to its former glory. Ralph Garcia Jr., who is a car body shop owner, was contacted by his associate in Mexico regarding the missing Mustang. The associate, Hugo Sanchez, eventually transported the car to a shop that Garcia owns in the city of Mexicali according to the Los Angeles Times.

The car was originally scheduled for a restoration session but Sanchez called Garcia saying that he ran the vehicle's identification numbers and he discovered that it was the missing 1968 Mustang GT of Steve McQueen. The pair then contacted Kevin Marti who was a car expert and he gave them the greenlight that the car was genuine.

In an interview with Fox News, Marti said that the 1968 Mustang GT discovered by the car restorers is 100 percent authentic. He made the conclusion after travelling to Mexico to verify the facts last week. He said he was very familiar with the vehicle identification numbers (VINs) of the cars that were used by Warner Bros. during the shooting of the Steve McQueen film.

Marti's company creates replacement parts and tags for classic Fords so he's qualified to spot a fake 1968 Mustang GT right away. Right now it's hard to put a price tag on the newly discovered Steve McQueen car but the said vehicles usually sell for millions of dollars at an auction. The upcoming 50th anniversary of the film "Bullitt" is expected raise the price a lot more.
