Korean Scientists Develop Fast-Charging Battery

South Korean scientists have developed a fast charging battery that could bring significant changes and contributions to electronic cars and mobile devices.

According to the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, the group of scientists was led by Kang Jeong-ku from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). The team discovered a new battery material and hybrid type of battery that can charge 100 times faster than the normal lithium-ion batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries have dominated the global rechargeable battery market because of its excellent power capability and energy. However, lithium-ion batteries main weakness is it takes too long before it charge and discharge completely.

A new storage mechanism was introduced as an alternative solution to the problem. The "supercapacitor" was developed and these kinds of batteries are much bigger compared to conventional batteries for a given charge.

A supercapacitor can store high capacity of electrochemical that connects the space between rechargeable batteries and electrolytic capacitors. It stores 10 to 100 times more energy and can deliver and accept charge much faster and tolerate more charge and discharge cycles compared to rechargeable batteries like lithium-ion.

According to the ministry, the new invented technology would have 1.5 times the capacity of lithium-ion batteries but it has the similar size.

The research project of the group of scientists was funded by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning in South Korea and the findings and analysis of the study were published at a journal called "Advanced Energy Materials."

The team's dedication and passion for discovering new technologies led them to success and new development of technologies that can make our lives easier and better.

"The latest development is forecast to be the centerpiece of electric cars and mobile devices in the future as they have stable energy capacity and can be charged at a relatively faster speed," the group of scientist said.

Furthermore, because of this new development in technology, many netizens are excited to try the newly invented fast-charging batteries which will help a lot of people in their problems with their phone batteries and even during emergency situations.
