Korean Actress ‘Yoo In-na’ Dropped From Chinese TV Series Due to THAAD Fallout
South Korean actress Yoo In-na has been abruptly dropped from a Chinese TV series whose filming was almost finished due to Seoul's decision of deployment of anti-missile defense system on the Korean Peninsula where Beijing opposed it.
Yoo has supporting roles in High Kick Through the Roof (2009) and Secret Garden (2010), she rose to fame as the lead actress in Queen In-hyun's Man (2012) which led to a supporting character role in the highly rated My Love from the Star (2013-14). Yoo is also the DJ of the highly rated radio program Let's Crank Up the Volume.
"We understand China's Hunan TV decided to cancel Yoo's appearance in its drama after consultation with her," said by CJ E&M, a media and entertainment unit of the South Korean conglomerate.
Yoo was cast as the lead actress for "Shuttle Love Millennium 2," a 28-episode drama series produced by the Hunan satellite TV in China. However, the TV station immediately informed the actress about their decision of replacing the show without giving any reasons.
The series is the Chinese remake of the South Korean cable TV channel tvN's 2012 period drama series "Queen In-hyun's Man." The new show's broadcasting schedule has yet to be set.
YG Entertainment, the actress' talent agency refrained from releasing an official statement on the incident, saying "We're now trying to confirm this."
China is a key overseas market for popular South Korean entertainment content such as K-pop and dramas. Due to the THAAD issues between China and South Korea, it greatly affects the Korean entertainment industry. There are amid concerns that South Korea's entertainment business might be the initial target of any Chinese backlash against the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system.
China was against the THAAD deployment because it was considered as a threat to its own national security interests and a threat to regional stability.
