Darth Vader Returns In New Action Packed ‘Rogue One’ Olympics Trailer
Lucasfilm just released the previously teased new trailer for the upcoming "Star Wars" anthology film "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" during the Olympic broadcast coverage, this time featuring the presence of everybody's favorite cybernetic sith lord.
After initially teasing the that the studio will release a new "Rogue One" trailer this week during a broadcast of the 2016 Rio Olympics, Lucasfilm finally aired the trailer featuring a more indept preview of the film and even more action scenes than the reveal trailer. More than that, the new "Rogue One" trailer also cemented the return to the big screen by none other than the man formerly known as Anakin Skywalker, also known as Darth Vader.
Shared on the official "Star Wars" YouTube channel, the trailer has a running time of 2 minutes and 15 seconds and began with what slower version of the Imperial March, more commonly referred to as Darth Vader's theme, made with what sounds like a piano arrangement.
Forrest Whitaker's character Saw Gerrera appeared with a larger presence in this latest promotional video, shown speaking with Felicity Jones' protagonist Jyn Erso about the current state of the galaxy and how it is crumbling down due to the expanding influence of the Galactic Empire.
The next few scenes showed Jyn Erso being briefed on what it is exactly she needs to do for the Rebel Alliance, specifically that she will be tasked with finding a way to destroy the empire's new superweapon; the Death Star.
The next few scenes showed Jyn preparing to head out, assisted by Diego Luna's Rebel Alliance Intelligence Officer Cassian Andor. These were followed by shots that served to show the negative effects of the empires rule, coupled with some action scenes courtesy of Jiang Wen's Baze Malbus and Donnie Yen's Chirrut Imwe.
Baze Malbus is described as a freelance assassin hardened by the Imperial occupation of his home, while Chirrut Imwe is a deeply spiritual blind warrior who follows the guidance of The Force. Though it seems like Imwe might be a Jedi or at least sensitive to The Force, the character was not shown using a lightsaber and he actually lacks any Force abilities.
The trailer then switched to a montage of what fans can expect to see in "Rogue One" action-wise, showing Jyn's struggles in her fateful quest to retrieve the plans that will one day be used by Like Skywalker to destroy the first Death Star.
Despite the action-packed nature of the trailer, the video's shining moment came right at the end. After showing that Jyn will apparently develop a deep camaraderie with the other characters in the film, the trailer chose to end with a shot of Darth Vader from behind, with his iconic breathing reverberating in the audio.
Though short, the trailer indicates that Darth Vader might finally be returning to the big screen in full, force-choking form. Catch him when "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" hits theaters on December 16.
