XODIAC X-UNIT Debuts with Boys Over Flowers OST Cover "Because I'm Stupid" - Complete Guide

XODIAC's first sub-unit X-UNIT officially debuted on June 25, 2025, with their mini album "TO.U", featuring a nostalgic cover of the iconic K-drama song "Because I'm Stupid."
X-UNIT consists of four XODIAC members: Lex, Hyunsik, Sing, and Leo. Unlike typical K-pop sub-units, X-UNIT doesn't have a fixed lineup, allowing for future member rotations within XODIAC's nine-member structure.
"One of the key traits of XODIAC is flexibility, and from the early days of our debut, some of our songs are performed by less than all nine members. This unit team called X-UNIT has existed since our debut, so it is not something new," Lex explained.
The title track "Because I'm Stupid" (내 머리가 나빠서) is a remake of SS501's 2009 song that served as the ending theme for the hit K-drama "Boys Over Flowers". The original starred SS501 member Kim Hyun-joong and became a massive hit across Asia.
Sing initially thought the cover idea was a joke: "I had never seen [Boys Over Flowers] before, and after this was suggested, I actually watched the drama and thought, 'oh yeah, I think we could pull this off' and kind of go for the ballad, slower song."
The strategic choice targets both existing K-pop fans and the broader audience who watched the drama worldwide, as Hyunsik noted.
"TO.U" features four ballad tracks showcasing the members' vocal abilities:
- "Because I'm Stupid" (title track)
- "Your Voice"
- "The Day We Broke Up"
- "Still Here" (featuring Chinese lyrics)
The Chinese track holds special meaning for Hong Kong-born Sing: "I really connect with the Chinese song we did together, 'Still Here,' because that's the language that I grew up with, so that was definitely the song that was kind of close to my heart."
XODIAC debuted on April 25, 2023, under JACSO Entertainment, a Hong Kong-based company. The group's multinational makeup includes Korean, Hong Kong, and Indonesian members.
Leo explained their motivation: "The genres that we really couldn't show as a full group, that's the kind of the ones that we really wanted to try, like ballads or different kinds of pop songs in English."
With fewer members, each vocalist gets more substantial parts compared to their work within the full nine-member group, allowing their individual talents to shine.
The members have already hinted at different concepts for future releases. Leo shared: "This time, the four of us tried different concepts and we want to try out different unit combinations, so I hope our fans look forward to that."
While their debut focused on vocal-driven ballads, future X-UNIT releases may explore dance and performance-focused concepts, demonstrating the unit's versatility.
X-UNIT's choice to cover a 16-year-old K-drama OST reflects a growing trend in K-pop where newer groups tap into nostalgic content to reach broader demographics. The remake stays close to the original's "pretty melody and moody production" while adding modern vocal arrangements.
This approach allows X-UNIT to introduce themselves to international audiences who may remember the drama's global popularity during the Korean Wave's early expansion.
X-UNIT's debut represents XODIAC's commitment to showcasing different sides of their artistry through strategic sub-unit formations, proving that even newer groups can successfully leverage nostalgia while building their own identity.
