Pete Hines Clarifies On 'The Elder Scrolls 6' Rumors; Says Bethesda Not ‘A Vending Machine’
Pete Hines, the Vice President of Bethesda Softworks, has taken to the Internet to clarify some misconceptions regarding the studio's next project in the first person action role playing "The Elder Scrolls" video game series, dousing flames of rumors suggesting that the next game in the series is now in the works.
Hines recently posted on Twitter to clarify the issue, saying that "the elder scrolls vi isn't in development. We simply said we would make it eventually. Don't want people misled."
The mistaken belief stemmed from an article written by PCGamesN regarding the performance of the 2011 first person shooter vehicular combat video game "Rage" and 2014's psychological survival horror "The Evil Within," both games published by Bethesda.
The article spoke of an interview Hines did regarding possible continuations of the titles, where both games reportedly did well enough the possibility for developing sequels for them exists. Apparently, the article mentioned that a next main numbered entry in "The Elder Scrolls" series is in the works based on an interview Todd Howard gave about the issue during this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3).
After Hines' clarification on Twitter, PCGamesN has since edited the article to remove the erroneous claim though a footnote stating the mistake still exists.
Hines also recently gave an interview with MMORPG at ZeniMax' recently held QuakeCon, where he spoke of his company's current and upcoming projects. As wont for any discussions with a Bethesda executive, the topic of the future of their highly "The Elder Scrolls" series came about.
The interview eventually reached the subject of Bethesda's new digital collectible card game, "The Elder Scrolls: Legends," with the publication taking the place of the common "Elder Scrolls" fan by asking Hines about work on "The Elder Scrolls VI" being done instead of the card game.
Hines responded by saying that Bethesda "is not a vending machine." According to him, his studio does not merely limit itself to alternating work on the main games in their popular franchises. Hines defended the studio developers' right to decide on which to work on by saying that Bethesda is "an incredibly talented studio of creative people. They've now made four games in a row, all of which were named Game of the Year, and they have a right to decide what they're interested in working on next and which direction they want to go."
While Hines reassured that they will eventually get to making "The Elder Scrolls VI," the project will only happen when it happens; with Bethesda director Todd Howard being the one to decide specifically when it will happen.
