Standalone Superman Movie Set For The DCEU As ‘Man of Steel’ Sequel Gets Greenlit
Despite some massive critical setbacks, it seems like the folks running the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) plan to keep the hype locomotive going as another solo film for everyone's favorite big blue boy scout Superman is up with a sequel to 2013's "Man of Steel" supposedly being greenlit.
Sources for The Wrap have come out claiming that the film is going into active development, which means that each member of the Justice League is now set for their own solo film within the DCEU proper. Although "Man of Steel" was indeed a solo film for Superman, the movie was originally made with no plans for extensions into a greater continuity and there was originally no word about giving the character another shot at a solo film nor about a full blown sequel.
The drought on any "Man of Steel 2" news was enough that fans actually believed that producers might have lost faith in giving the character his own film again. Fortunately for fans of the Last Son of Krypton however, the source has gone so far as to claim that the upper echelons of the DCEU are actually keeping the character at the forefront of their plans for the continuation of the films' universe.
It should be noted that the news only came from an anonymous source claiming intimacy with the project; as there has been no official word yet from Warner Bros., which has apparently yet to return any inquiries, the possibility of the whole thing being fake is still real.
Superman's last appearance in the DCEU was March's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," which acted as the proper introduction of the DCEU to the public. Henry Cavill played the Man of Steel, reprising the role from the original titular film, who ended up in a fight against Batman, played by Ben Affleck, after some machinations by Lex Luthor, played by Jesse Eisenberg.
In addition to properly beginning the DCEU, "Dawn of Justice" also functioned as the platform that will kick off the beginnings of the Justice League. For the film universe, the members of the League, aside from Batman and Superman, are Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg.
Wonder Woman was also introduced in "Dawn of Justice," played by Gal Gadot, while the others featured in various cameos. Every character is set to have their own solo film, with "Wonder Woman" slated for next year followed by the first "Justice League" film.
A standalone "Aquaman" will follow in 2018, with "Flash" originally set for the same year but the date has now been retracted. "Cyborg" is set to hit in 2020, after the planned "Justice League" sequel. A standalone "Batman" film to be directed by Affleck is currently planned, though there is no date as of yet.
All of the above suggests that anyone waiting for a solo Superman film will have to wait for quite a bit, with 2020 the possible earliest.
