26-year-old Chase Dellwo was hunting elk with his brother Shane in the Rocky Mountains located in north-west Montana on Saturday amid snow. The American hunter was bringing a crossbow while walking up a creek bed when he encountered a giant male grizzly, The Associated Press noted Oct. 5.

Chase was only 3 feet away from the sleeping bear before he saw it. The hunter managed to take a few steps back before the bear attacked him.

"He let go, but he was still on top of me roaring the loudest roar I have ever heard," says Chase.

Chase adds that the bear left for a moment before it came back to bite his leg. RT reported on Tuesday that the male grizzly also knocked the hunter down and bit his head.

"[The bear] gave it a pretty good shake and threw me a ways," he says.

Amid the tension and fear because of the attack, Chase remembered a tip given to him by his grandmother.

"I remembered an article that my grandmother gave me a long time ago that said large animals have bad gag reflexes. So I shoved my right arm down his throat," he reveals.

The tip worked as Chase made the 350- to 400-pound grizzly bear leave.

"I forced myself to calm down and not to panic. I was lost. I cleared the blood out of my eyes. If I had allowed myself to panic I would still be in there."

He was rushed to Benefis Teton Medical Center after he found his brother. Following the bear attack, Chase needs more than a hundred stitches and staples in his head and some other parts of his face. Also, the American hunter suffered from swollen eye and deep wounds on his leg.

Despite the incident, Chase does not blame the bear for what happened.

"I want everyone to know that it wasn't the bear's fault. He was as scared as I was," he says.
