DC's 'Aquaman' Causing Delays To 'Robotech' Movie Release Date

Director James Wan's career was propelled into international fame after he finished "Furious 8" without franchise Paul Walker. Not only did his movie earn billions at the box offices, it also landed him the two major projects: DC's "Aquaman" and Sony's live-action adaptation of "Robotech."

However, sources claim that the "Insidious" director won't be able to start work on the "Robotech" movie until he finishes the DC tentpole film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Aquaman" has become a priority for Warner Bros. and is father along in development than the mecha-based film.

Sony acquired the rights to "Robotech" in March 2015 and plans to turn the franchise into their version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The original animation's plot tells the story of how humans discovered "Robotechnology" from an alien ship that crash landed on a South Pacific island. With the new found technology, humans created giant shape-shiting robots to defend the Earth from alien invaders.

How much Wan will base the movie from the source material remains a mystery. However, Cinema Blend alleges that the adaptation will center on "two pilots, who are rebellious, untested and, naturally, humanity's last hope."

The project will be overseen by Sony Pictures Entertainment Group boss Doug Belgrad and Columbia Pictures production chief Michael De Luca.

'Robotech' is unique in that it has always been a marriage of spectacle with human characters that seem drawn from life," De Luca said in a statement published by The Verge. "With a history that offers an epic love triangle, a renegade hero, and a world on the brink of extinction, 'Robotech' offers a wide scope and a rich and impressive universe where the story possibilities are endless."

"Robotech" is based on from a Japanese series called "The Macross Saga." The show first aired in the United States in 1985 and ran 85 episodes.

Stay tuned for more news on Sony's "Robotech" movie's release date as they become available.
