'Sons Of Anarchy' Spinoff Confirmed; Charlie Hunnam To Lead Upcoming Prequel?

"Sons of Anarchy" may have ended its run on television, but recent reports claim that a spinoff to the biker gang series is in the works and Charlie Hunnam is reportedly attached to the project.

Series creator Kurt Sutter previously revealed that a "Sons of Anarchy" spinoff was being developed and that it will center on the The Mayans. According to Design & Trend, the film is rumored to be a prequel to the original show and that Charlie Hunnam will return to his role as Jax Teller.

While the "Pacific Rim" actor's return is still uncertain, Sutter offered details about what fans can expect in the upcoming movie.

We were talking about the idea of doing things for other markets, like the Spanish-speaking market," Sutter said in an interview with Deadline. "I casually said I'd be open to doing something with the Mayans. It's the same [biker] subculture, but it'd be interesting to see the influences of that culture and how it impacts the subculture we already understand."

Sutter also clarified that the "Sons of Anarchy" spinoff won't be a prequel, diminishing the chances of Charlie Hunnam's return. However, the director hinted that this doesn't mean he's not brining back characters from the original series.

"I would do a contemporary piece, not a prequel, and place it far enough away from Northern California that it wouldn't step on the mythology that's already been told," Sutter told the publication. "It doesn't mean that there couldn't be some cool, ironic crossovers with familiar characters as the series progressed." 

Sutter also said that he plans on setting the spinoff outside the town of Charming.

"I wouldn't want to set it too close to the world we already know, and step on that," he added. "It would be cannibalizing what we worked very hard to create and I wouldn't do anything to undermine."
