Apple CarPlay, which is considered to be the ultimate co-pilot, first debuted in March 2014. It has been used to play music, make calls, send texts and receive them, all in a way that lets you stay focused on the road. As an update, it is now compatible with a wide range of cars.

According to HIS senior analyst Jeremy Carlson, Apple's CarPlay and Google's Android Auto will be adapted as native interfaces as well as smartphone mirroring applications.

"CarPlay and Android Auto are already drastically undermining the native in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) system makers", he said, as cited by ComputerWorld, "This is one of the biggest disruptions to the [IVI] space. Even if you look back on personal navigation devices, this is much more fundamental."

"Being able to bring content into the [IVI] with smartphones...really does fundamentally change what consumers want in their cars," Carlson added.

After having accumulated a large stable partnership for the platform, Apple has officially published a list of Apple CarPlay Compatible cars, including the already compatible and the future ones.

Until now, there were only indications of Brand compatibility with CarPlay. Whereas, there weren't any indications pertaining to the individual models that were compatible. But now, the new list published by the company in its website reveals all the individual models under the particular brand that are/to be compatible with the product.

The published list includes various carmakers worldwide, with many familiar to U.S citizens such as Volkswagen, Honda, Audi, Chevrolet and Ford. It also included brands popularised in other countries like Skoda, Seat, DS Automobiles, Citroen, etc.

First launched in March 2014, the platform which had low support until mid-2015 is still on its way in picking up new partners. Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep vehicles will get support only later this year.

As of Jan.11 2016, the list of CarPlay compatible cars published by the company website includes individual models of Audi, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Citroën, DS Automobiles, Ferrari, Ford, GMC, Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes, Mitsubishi, Opel, Porsche, Peugeot, Seat, Skoda, Suzuki, Volkswagen and Volvo.

The platform enables users to replicate their iPhone's look and capabilities on their car's central console through the use of hands-free and eyes-free access to Apple Maps, iTunes, Messaging and other third-party apps like Spotify and iHeartRadio. It is compatible with iPhone models 5 or later that runs iOS 8 or above. It also offers hands-free use of Siri (Apple's voice-enabled assistant).

In the List of Apple CarPlay Compatible cars, GM topped the list with 35 models (including 10 Cadillacs, five Opels, four GMCs and two Buicks), Volkswagen came second with 18 models.
