'Mad Max: The Wasteland' Production Time Too Much For George Miller?
"Mad Max: The Wasteland," the sequel to last year's best-reviewed film, might not get a release date as director George Miller has announced he's done with the franchise.
"I won't make more 'Mad Max' movies," Miller, 60, told Page 6. "'Fury Road' was forever getting completed. If you finish one in a year, it's considered a leap of faith. Start, stop, start again. I've shot in Australia in a field of wild flowers and flat red earth when it rained heavily forever."
It's no suprise that Miller is calling it quits with the franchise. He had been attempting to shoot "Fury Road" since the early 2000's but couldn't due to the Sept. 11 attacks and the Iraq war at the time.
"We had to wait 18 months and every return to the US was 27 hours," the "Happy Feet" helmer added. "Those 'Mad Maxes' take forever. I won't do those anymore."
While Miller is leaving his beloved franchise behind, it doesn't mean that "Mad Max: The Wasteland" won't get a release date. Like George Lucas did with his long-running space saga, Miller could pass the torch to a younger filmmaker to take over the "Mad Max" franchise. The 70-year-old director may have already hinted this much in an earlier interview with Studio 360.
"What happened to Max after 'Fury Road'? What happened before 'Fury Road'? What happened to the other characters?" he said. "Those stories are there - probably not as the next film but the film after. I'd like to do one of them. We'll see. As John Lennon said, life is what happens when you're making other plans."
"There are so many other directors out there," Miller said. "They're getting a real sense of cinema, very, very early. There are some great directors out there."
Will producers ever announce a release date for "Mad Max: The Wasteland?" Stay tuned as updates become available.
