Announcing VLC for Apple TV

VLC media player for Apple TV has officially been launched, enabling its users play formats that were previously not supported.

The launch of the product comes as good news to owners of the TV that has by far not supported certain formats of media files. Now it gives them access to all their video files in their native formats with no conversions to be made.

According to VideoLan's President Jean Baptise Kempf, Similar to that of the iOS version of VLC, the new apple TV iteration lets you play "Virtually all formats under the sun!", cited PCMag.

The Apple TV is really VLC media player for iOS ported to work on the huge screen. Two thousand beta testers have been using it since mid-november via the company's TestFlight Service.

Company developer Paul Kuhne explained the convenience to VentureBeat.

"It's easier to put it the other way around," he said. "On Apple TV, users can only play content recorded using mobile devices or media purchased from iTunes Store by default, so H264/AAC and HTTP Live Streams (HLS)."

This new free app automatically discovers all media files on your local network and lets you browse through them with your remote control. In addition to this, theres also a remote playback feature that lets you beam media stored on other devices to your TV via a web browser.

The company's announcement also iterated on how the product supports custom playback speed.

"Unlike any other player on Apple TV so far, VLC supports custom playback speed," according to the official statement. "VLC is increasingly used to watch talks and documentation in education so it was naturally of high importance for us to include this feature from the start."

VideoLan has also announced that the company has been working to port VLC for iPad and iPhone to the new Apple TV since Tim Cook and Co. announced the latest Siri-equipped box(back in September).

"It needed quite a few adaptations, but it is now finally ready to be published. We are extremely excited to share this initial version of VLC for Apple TV today." Said VideoLan. And as for now, it is not possible to stream files from Cloud services like Dropbox, OneDrive or Box, but the company has been working on it.
