Last week, During the American Astronomical society's meeting; the researches of Max Planck Institute for Astronomy have presented the Milky Way Galaxy Map.

The said map depicts the evolution of the galaxy by including the ages of more than 70,000 red giant stars. The researchers have spent years gathering spectral information spanning 50,000 light years, which is half the size of the Milky Way galaxy.

According to The Washington Post, The age of Red giants can be reverse engineered based on their mass which can be calculated by combining data from Apache Point Observatory Galaxy Evolution Experiment and images from the Kepler space telescope. Thus, the team of researchers from Max Plank Institute were able to use these old-timers in order to find out how the different regions of our galaxy churned out stars.

Melissa Ness of The Max Plank Institute for Astronomy released a statement. "Close to the center of our Galaxy, we see old stars that were formed when it was young and small," she said. "Farther out, we see young stars. We conclude that our Galaxy grew up by growing out."

"To see this, we needed an age map spanning large distances, and that's what this new discovery gives us," she added.

The recent findings confirmed what scientist had already doubted, with the oldest stars clusteing at the center of the galaxy and the edges bustling with young stellar activity.

It started as a small disk over 13 billion years ago and gre outward, accumulating gas and dust to form the arms of stars to make a galactic spiral full of countless alien worlds.

The largest age map of the Milky way Galaxy has revealed how our galaxy has evolved through ages, showing the latest results as colored dots superimposed on an artist's conception of the galaxy.

The researchers have used reg giants to help map the galaxy. These bright stars are in their final stages of lives and can be observed that they are at large distances from the sun into the very inner and outer reaches of the galaxy.

In this regard, Melissa Ness explained further. "In the galaxy we know best-our own-we can clearly read the story of how galaxies form in the universe with large amounts of cold dark matter", she said, as cited by ScienceWorldReport. "Because we can see so many individual stars in the Milky Way, we can chart its growth in unprecedented detail. This unprecedented, enormous map really is one for the ages."

With the Milky Way Galaxy's map being presented, there's another fact revealed that The stars discovered recently at the galaxy's center, is considered to be the oldest ever! (Dating back to when the universe was just 300 million years young considering its 13.8 billion year old history).
