'Shadowhunters' News: TV Show To Follow The 'Mortal Instruments' Storyline; Cast Promises Fans Will Be Surprised

Hardcore fans of the "Mortal Instruments" series by Cassandra Clare will be glad to know that the TV show adaptation of the book, "Shadowhunters," will stay true with its original storyline upon its release date. The cast promised that fans will be satisfied despite subtle differences Freeform has made.
Executive producer Ed Decter said at the Television Critic Association (via Variety) that, "We are absolutely starting from the beginning of the books and we stay unbelievably true to the spirit of the books."
"We wanted to have surprises both for the real hardcore fans and then we also want to introduce the viewers who have never been introduced to the world carefully and slowly so that they can get caught up in it like we are."
Lead cast Katherine McNamara, who will play Clariss "Clary" Fray on the TV show series, dyed her hair firebrand red in order to define her fiery and bold character, according to Fresnobee.
"You know immediately that she is tough and fiery. We spent days coming up with just the right color for Clary. It defines her so much, I will never wear that color again in any other role," McNamara says during a chat in the bar at the Langham Hotel.
"Shadowhunters" follows Clary's revelation of her true identity. She will figure out that she comes from a long line of Shadowhunters-half-human and half-angel hybrids who devoted their life to protect the mundane by hunting down demons. In her journey, she will need Jace Wayland alongside Isabelle and Alec to navigate the new world she was hidden from.
McNamara described Clary's character as a double-edged sword.
"It is amazing to have such a rich universe to draw on and a character who has been so well developed over this saga," McNamara said.
"I love having that because it gives me so much to go off of and I can see a complete picture of who Cassandra thinks she is. But the television show is not a carbon copy of the book. We do our own thing. Take our own path. Because of that, the character is slightly different, which gives me something to play off of."
The "Shadowhunters" cast also stars Dominic Sherwood as Jace Wayland, Alberto Rosende as Simon, Emeraude Toubia as Isabelle Lightwood, Matthew Daddario as Alec Lightwood, Isaiah Mustafa as Luke Garroway, and Harry Shum Jr. as Magnus Bane. The TV show's official release date is set on January 12, 9 pm on Freeform.
