Vivo announced its newest flagship phone, the X80 Pro, which features a larger in-display fingerprint sensor. The touch sensor has a wider functional area than the typical small sensors seen on most Android phones, allowing for a more intuitive, muscle-memory guided phone unlock when you're not actively looking at the screen.

Aside from its larger touch range, the scanner can also register new fingertips with a single press on the screen. Conventional phones with a fingerprint lock typically have you consecutively lifting and pressing your finger to the phone to scan your entire print.

The sensor also works just as smoothly if your hand or the screen is wet. With a larger scanning area, users can set the phone to require two simultaneous fingerprints and not just one for added security.

The technology called "3D Ultrasonic Large Fingerprint Sensor" comes from Qualcomm, which officially calls it "3D Sonic Max". The X80 Pro marks the most mainstream deployment of the touch feature.

Vivo has initially demonstrated larger scanning surface areas in "Apex" concept phones, including a "full-display" version in its 2019 model. However, the X80 Pro is one of the first commercial devices to actually ship with a sensor module that's bigger than the tip of a thumb.

The X80 Pro also matches the company's growing recognition for excellent camera quality. Its Zeiss-branded camera hardware with the red trademark T* coating on the lenses is similar to last year's X70 Pro Plus. There's a 50-megapixel main sensor, a 48-megapixel ultrawide, a 12-megapixel 2x telephoto, and an 8-megapixel 5x periscope telephoto, all harbored in its camera bump. The only difference is that the 2x lens now utilizes Vivo's gimbal-style optical stabilization.

The tech company is also employing a new custom imaging chip called the V1 Plus. The V1 Plus' hardware is designed to handle image processing in difficult situations like night-time video capture. The X80 Pro also has a "cinematic video bokeh" mode designed to emulate the oval bokeh seen in scenes with shallow depth of field shot on Zeiss anamorphic lenses. The chip allows for reduced power consumption, says Vivo.

For its other specifications, it handles with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. The screen is a 6.78-inch 1440p curved OLED panel with a refresh rate of 120Hz. Lastly, the battery is 4,700mAh and chargers at up to 80W with a cable or 50W wirelessly through Vivo's proprietary FlashCharge system. Pricing and regional release information for the X80 Pro are yet to be announced.
