Spotify announced that it was adding the ability to respond to phone calls and other new features to its Car Thing infotainment system last Thursday.

The smart player function was designed to provide "a more seamless and personalized in-car listening experience."  Owners of the device will now be able to use the intuitive product interface to add songs and podcasts to a queue and use voice commands like "Hey Spotify" for hands-free jamming.

For example, saying "Hey Spotify, queue 'Spring Day'" or any song title you'd like to listen to will arrange as the next track. Spotify says the new "add to queue" feature is one of its most-requested for Car Thing. You can even request a personalized playlist by mentioning a genre, mood, or activity that matches the moment.

Incoming calls will also be displayed for Car Thing users and seamlessly answer them or dismiss them directly in the Car Thing interface. Swapping between or controlling other media can be easily accomplished using presets, voice, or simply tapping the screen.

The Car Thing device uses Bluetooth to connect to your phone, and you can either run a cable to plug it into your car or have your phone connect to your car wirelessly via Bluetooth. The device lacks a rechargeable battery so it needs to stay plugged into your car's USB socket.

According to Spotify, the features will roll out for iOS users automatically, and Android availability will roll out "at a later date."

Car Thing is available to purchase for $89.99. It requires a Spotify Premium subscription plan along with a phone with a mobile data connection. More detail on how to buy and use Car Thing can be found here.
