Japanese tech giant Sony has announced it is gearing up to produce electric cars.

Sony recently unveiled a new sports utility vehicle concept, and alongside it is the announcement of its plans to establish a new subsidiary.

The company is best known for its electronic gadgets and products, and from there, Sony is planning to test new waters.

According to Sony, its newest operating subsidiary will be called "Sony Mobility Inc."

Additionally, Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida shared that "Sony Mobility Inc." is set to be launched in the coming months. Yoshida also spilled that Sony is considering the commercial launch of its own electric vehicle soon.

As it makes its step into the electric car arena, Sony is working on redefining mobility as CEO Yoshida said, "With our imaging and sensing, cloud, 5G and entertainment technologies combined with our content mastery, we believe Sony is well positioned as a creative entertainment company to redefine mobility.

"Sony has unveiled its SUV prototype at this year's CES conference in Las Vegas. Its Vision-S 02 SUV prototype features Sony's take on the future of the electric automobile.

Using Sony's very own SNE sensors, the Vision-S 02 not just boasts self-driving functions but also utilizes the company's expertise in making quality entertainment products.

Soon, passengers of Sony's electric SUVs will be able to play their favorite PlayStation video games while on the go.

The Japanese tech company introduced its first prototype electric vehicle, Vision-S 01, in 2020. Since then it has begun testing on Europe's public roads. It shares the same EV cloud technology as the newest model, Vision-S 02.

Meanwhile, Sony is yet to address if its subsidiary will be building its own electric cars under its own brand or will partner with other established automakers.

Aside from Sony, tech giant Apple is also rumored to be making its own electric vehicle. However, nothing is yet to be confirmed with regard to Apple's future plans.
