'The Crowned Clown' Shares Secrets In Filming Yeo Jin Goo Playing Two Characters; Actor Praised For Portraying Dual Roles
Korean actor Yeo Jin Goo has been gathering a lot of praise for his acting skills in The Crowned Clown. Both the production staff and viewers of the K-drama lauded Yeo for his excellent performance as both clown Ha Seon and King Lee Heon.
The production of the tvN drama revealed that what Yeo is doing is not an easy job for any actor. In a way, Yeo is playing three characters in the show: the clown Ha Seon, King Lee Heon, and the person who pretends to be the king.
The production of The Crowned Clown has shared some details on what is happening behind the scenes. Like in other TV series or movie where an actor plays as identical twins, the tvN drama also uses the same technique in filming. They use a stand-in actor and only his back is filmed.
In the scenes were both Ha Seon and King Lee Heon's faces have to on camera at the same time, The Crowned Clown's production said they used computer graphics to superimpose the two characters' pictures separately. This is where Yeo Jin Goo's skills have been tested the most as he needs to act alone and imagine his other character is in front of him.
"The scene in which Ha Seon and Lee Heon appear at the same time takes twice as long as the other scenes and takes a lot of effort. It is a very difficult performance for the actor, both physically and in mind control. We are very surprised of and grateful for Yeo Jin Goo's perfect immersion of his role," the production staff commented about Yeo (via Soompi).
The Crowned Clown is about a clown and a king who physically look exactly the same but have opposite personalities. Amidst the power struggle at the empire and attempts on his life, King Lee Heon decided to put a clown that looks like him in the throne to act like him. While acting as the King's double, the clown Ha Seon falls in love with the Queen (Lee Se Young).
Meanwhile, it was revealed during the TV series filming that Yeo Jin Goo has a talent in drawing. The sketch of the chief eunuch (Jang Gwang) that Ha Seo gave to him was actually drawn by Yeo himself.
According to the production crew, they conducted a "chief eunuch drawing contest" on set and Yeo submitted an entry. In the end, the actor's hand drawing was chosen and appeared on a scene.
