Ku Bon Chan Bags Gold in Archery, Makes History
The South Korean archery team is on a roll!
On Friday, archer Ku Bon Chan grabbed another gold medal for his country when he won against Jean-Charles Valladont in the men's individual category at the Rio Olympics.
Ku not only bagged the gold but also made history as the first South Korean male archer to win two gold medals in a single Olympics, and sealed South Korea's Olympics gold medal sweep in archery for the first time in the history.
According to Yonhap News, the 23-year old Ku is known for being the mood maker and clown among his teammates Kim Woo Jin and Lee Seung Yun. He even jokes around during practice making his teammates and coaches bursting with laughter.
However, the gold medalist focused more on winning the gold medal and bringing honor to his country during his matches in the ongoing sports event, surviving two nail-biting shoot-offs that led him to reach the final round.
After his win in the quarterfinals against Taylor Worth and semifinals win over Brady Ellison, Ku said, "I thought I was going to die. I could not even maintain my usual posture, and I made mistakes because I got too ahead of myself. I told myself I should be confident and make sure I won't leave here with regrets. It worked out pretty well."
He also claimed that he just got lucky. "I don't think I made history. I just prepared as much as I could and things went my way. But I am not going to be content and complacent. I'll keep going forward."
Ku also quipped, "Before the competition, my female teammates held my hands for encouragement. And I don't think I'll ever hold hands with such famous female athletes again. I won't wash my hands today."
On Saturday, South Korean President Park Geun-Hye congratulated the national archery team which was finally able to win four gold medals in all the categories of the archery games.
Park said, "Ku overcame a huge burden with the faith that he could do it and calmly made his shots."
