South Korean actor Lee Min Ho was appointed by the organizing committee as an honorary ambassador for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, as reported by Yonhap News on Friday. Lee Min Ho is the first actor to be given such designation.

"As a fan of skiing and surfing, I take great interest in Olympics," says Lee. "I will try to promote the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics the best I can."

The 28 year old actor joins sports personalities who were also named as goodwill ambassadors. The list includes, "US skier Lindsey Vonn, Texas Rangers outfielder Shin Soo Choo, former Olympic speed skating gold medalist Choo Shin Soo and former Olympic figure skating champion Kim Yu Na," as reported by the International Business Times on Saturday.

The pronouncement was made by the organizing committee of the Winter Games on Friday following the fifth visit of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission at Pyeongchang, Gangwon province.

"As much as the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, the 2010 Tokyo Summer Olympics, and the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics are being consecutively held in Asia, Hallyu star Lee Min Ho has been entrusted to be the honorary ambassador," says the spokesperson for the organizing committee.

The South Korean actor took the spotlight after playing the role of Gu Jun Pyo in television series "Boys Over Flowers" in 2009. After that, he also starred as a young architect in the drama series "Personal Taste" in 2010.

In addition, Lee also starred in action drama "City Hunter" which earned him a massive following not just in South Korea, but also in the Philippines, China, Japan and some parts of Europe.

Aside from acting, Lee also entered the music industry with the release of his first album in 2013 entitled, "My Everything." On the same year, Lee starred in a new drama series called "The Heirs."

Meanwhile, the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics will take place at Pyeongchang, a county in Gangwon province in South Korea from Feb. 9 to 25.
