PlayStation VR’s Rumored $800 Price Tag Debunked! Sony Claims Error On Amazon Listing
The upcoming PlayStation VR will cost buyers an arm and a leg, if the rumors about its price are to be believed.
When Occulus Rift was announced that its pre-order will commence Jan. 6, PlayStation VR dedicated page on Amazon Canada has surfaced online. The retailer's listing revealed that the virtual reality headset will carry $1,125.35 CAD price tag, which translates to just about $800 USD, Forbes first reported.
However, before the whopping price of the PlayStation VR cause uproar, Sony shoot down the rumors. The tech company claims that the wrong listing was an error by Amazon, and price for the upcoming virtual reality headset's price is yet to be announced
On the other hand, SuperData estimated that the PlayStation VR will cost between $400 and $600. And 1.9million units will be sold when launched this year, PlayStation LifeStyle reported.
So far, there are high hopes that the PlayStation VR will be cheaper than its competitors. Occulus Rift has been announced to cost $599, while backers who donated "enough" for the Kickstarter project will get their hands on the VR headset for free. Shipping of the said device will start by March.
As per Bandai Namco's Katsuhiro Harada, the Occulus Rift is "a bit on the expensive side."
When asked by a follower on Twitter if the PlayStation VR would cost around $300-$400, he expressed his optimism that it would fall under that price tag, Movie News Guide reported.
Attack of the fanboy added that Katsuhiro Harada is behind "Tekken 7" and "Summer Lesson." Reportedly, these upcoming titles are the first few PS4 games that are compatible with the PlayStation VR. Bandai Namco redesigned "Tekken 7" to work with the headset.
Moreso, unlike the Occulus Rift, PlayStation VR only requires a PS4 console which costs around $350.
As for its release date, the PlayStation VR will be shipped later this year.
