Spider-Man: Brand New Day Sets All-Time Box Office Record
"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" passed $936.7 million at the domestic box office this week, overtaking "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and its $936.66 million total to become the highest-grossing film in North American history - a record the 2015 Star Wars sequel had held for a decade.
Sony and Marvel's film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, opened July 31 and reached the all-time domestic mark in 36 days, compared to the 50 days "The Force Awakens" needed in 2015. Along the way it broke a string of records that had stood since "Avengers: Endgame" in 2019: the biggest domestic opening weekend ever at $360 million, the biggest single day at $169.8 million, and the highest Thursday night preview gross in history at $72 million.
The film's worldwide total now stands at $2.451 billion, making it the third-highest-grossing movie of all time, trailing only "Avatar" at $2.92 billion and "Avengers: Endgame" at $2.799 billion. Its $932 million global opening weekend is second only to "Endgame's" $1.223 billion. Internationally, "Brand New Day" has already topped the entire overseas run of its predecessor, "Spider-Man: No Way Home," and become the highest-grossing foreign film ever released in India, surpassing "Avatar: The Way of Water."
"Brand New Day" picks up after Peter Parker erased himself from the world's memory at the end of "No Way Home," with a new threat closing in on New York. It is Holland's highest-grossing film to date, including his run in the "Avengers" films, and it's also the top-grossing release of both Cretton's and Zendaya's careers.
The record has an expiration clock built into it. "Avengers: Endgame" is getting a theatrical rerelease this month, a move likely to pad the very total "Brand New Day" is chasing at the worldwide level, even as the newer film holds the North American crown outright. Whether "Brand New Day" can close the nearly $350 million gap to "Endgame" globally, or the roughly $470 million gap to "Avatar," will depend on how much further international markets like China and the U.K. - already its two biggest overseas territories - have left to give.
