Nirvana Ends the VMAs' 8-Year All-Female Vanguard Streak
MTV announced Nirvana as this year's Video Vanguard Award recipient on September 9 - 34 years to the day after the band first took the VMA stage in 1992, taunted network censors by teasing the unreleased "Rape Me" before launching into "Lithium," and watched Krist Novoselic's bass come down on his own head after he threw it in the air.
The band will accept the award at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on September 27, airing live on CBS from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and simulcasting on MTV and Paramount+. MTV's announcement didn't say who would be on hand to accept it. Kurt Cobain died in 1994; surviving members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic have made sporadic joint appearances in recent years, including reunion sets at last year's FireAid benefit concert and SNL's 50th-anniversary special.
Every Video Vanguard recipient since 2015 has been a woman: Rihanna, P!nk, Jennifer Lopez, Missy Elliott, Nicki Minaj, Shakira, Katy Perry and Mariah Carey, in the years MTV gave the award out at all. Kanye West was the last man to receive it, a decade before Nirvana breaks the streak. The award itself predates that run by three decades - The Beatles and David Bowie were the first recipients in 1984, and Guns N' Roses, U2 and the Red Hot Chili Peppers all won it in earlier eras when MTV still built the VMAs around rock bands rather than pop stars.
Nirvana's own VMA record reads like a highlight reel of the ceremony's more chaotic nights. The band won Best New Artist and Best Alternative Video in 1992, the year of the Novoselic bass incident, then came back in 1993 to win Best Alternative Video for "In Bloom." After Cobain's death, Grohl and Novoselic returned in 1994 to collect two more trophies for "Heart-Shaped Box." Grohl kept his VMA streak alive as a bandleader in his own right, winning Best Group Video with Foo Fighters in 1996.
This year's ceremony is otherwise built around Madonna and Taylor Swift, who lead all nominees with 11 and nine nods respectively. Snoop Dogg hosts. Nirvana's Vanguard announcement arrived as its own separate news moment more than a week ahead of that broader nominee slate, timed to a date on the calendar that only makes sense if you already know what happened on it in 1992.
Whether Grohl and Novoselic show up together, separately, or not at all won't be confirmed until closer to the ceremony. What MTV has confirmed is the date it chose to make the announcement - and that, this year, the Vanguard goes to a band that hasn't had all three of its members in the same room, ever, in over three decades.
