BTS Will Co-Headline the World Cup Final. It's the First Halftime Show in FIFA History.
On May 14, FIFA and Global Citizen confirmed BTS, Madonna, and Shakira as co-headliners for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final halftime show - the first of its kind in the tournament's 96-year history. The July 19 performance at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey will run 11 minutes, broadcast live during the championship match.
The lineup was announced through a social media video curated by Coldplay's Chris Martin, featuring Sesame Street and Muppets characters - with BTS appearing via FaceTime. FIFA president Gianni Infantino called it "a singular moment at the intersection of sport, culture and purpose."
The show's structure mirrors what the NFL built over decades with the Super Bowl. Both Madonna and Shakira have Super Bowl pedigree: Madonna headlined the 2012 Super Bowl, while Shakira co-headlined with Jennifer Lopez in 2020. BTS brings different credentials - not the halftime format, but the fanbase scale that makes it viable. The group's Arirang world tour, launched in April, is already tracking as one of the largest concert tours of the current cycle. Their presence at MetLife puts K-pop inside the world's most-watched single sporting event.
The K-pop footprint at this World Cup runs deeper than the final. BLACKPINK's Lisa is slated for the June 12 opening ceremony in Los Angeles alongside Katy Perry, Future, and Tyla. BTS member Jungkook performed "Dreamers" at the 2022 Qatar World Cup opening - the first Korean artist at the event. The July 19 slot is a different tier. Co-headlining a final, not a ceremony.
The performance is attached to the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, which is targeting $100 million to expand access to education and soccer for children worldwide. One dollar from every World Cup match ticket sold has been funneled to the fund, which has already cleared $30 million. BTS said in a statement they were honored to "connect with millions of viewers around the world in support of children's education." Shakira, whose official 2026 World Cup song "Dai Dai" drops today, is a board member of the fund. The charitable framing has become standard architecture for this kind of announcement - but the logistics underneath it are real. The show's broadcast details have not yet been confirmed.
South Korea faces Croatia in Guadalajara on June 12 in their opening group match. Whether the national team reaches MetLife on July 19 is a separate question. BTS will be there either way.
